How Often Does an HOA Need a Reserve Study?

In California, the board has a reserve study done at least once every three years, including a diligent visual inspection, and reviews it every year (Civ. Code §5550). Other states differ.

Between studies

Each year the remaining lives drop by one, costs inflate, and the balance changes. Put your latest study's component list into Reservetally, update the balance and contribution, and see whether the plan still holds — then let your reserve specialist confirm.
